Cultivating Eco-Social Work Amidst Unsustainable Academic Practices: Perspectives From Doctoral Students

This panel discusses perspectives and experiences centered around developing eco-social work identities in academic education despite receiving limited professional support. Doctoral students, reflecting different stages in the PhD journey and various backgrounds, share their exploration and engagement in eco-social work and critical theory for transformative community practice and impact.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize the responsibility and opportunity for social work to integrate critical and decolonial eco-social justice in all levels of social work theory, education and practice
  2. Explore how critical and decolonial approaches can enhance social work’s approach to eco-social justice towards a more equitable and sustainable future.
  3. Develop an understanding of the successes, challenges, and barriers to eco-social work identity development in academia to inform best practices across the academic spectrum.
