This workshop will introduce participants to concepts of epistemic violence and epistemic justice, present examples of practicing epistemic justice in teaching, and give participants opportunities to explore how they might implement practices in their own teaching. The presenters will also make recommendations for ways to avoid epistemic violence in education.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will understand epistemic violence as a form of coloniality, racism, and western-centrism in relation to how knowledge is conceptualized, constructed, practiced, and articulated in western postsecondary classrooms – broadly, and in social work.
  2. Participants will recognize and appreciate techniques for disrupting epistemic violence, and promoting epistemic justice, through common elements of preparing and teaching courses (e.g., developing learning outcomes, designing and evaluating assignments, choosing course topics, materials, and learning activities).
  3. Participants begin to generate ideas for championing epistemic justice – as an approach to disrupting and dismantling coloniality, racism, and western-centrism – through common elements of preparing and teaching courses (e.g., developing learning outcomes, designing and evaluating assignments, choosing course topics, materials, and learning activities).
