Session: Navigating the College Experience, While Being Black

The Weathering Effect and Its Impact on Black Graduate Students Attending Historically White Institutions

This session presents a qualitative study using the weathering effect theoretical framework to understand the experiences of Black graduate students in Historically White Institutions (HWIs) during the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing racial, political, and societal stressors. Results will be presented based on the 17 students’ Zoom interviews over two months.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon completion, the participants will be able to describe some of the challenges faced by Black graduate students attending HWIs.
  2. Upon completion, the participant will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the weathering effect theoretical framework.
  3. Upon completion, the participant will be able to list three recommendations that can be incorporated to better support Black graduate students in their academic journeys at HWIs.
