Session: Family and Adolescent Considerations in the Treatment of Substance Use Disorder

Exploring Compliance in Family Treatment Courts: A Qualitative Study of Parents’ Perspectives

Family Treatment Courts (FTCs) are specialized child welfare courts for families with parental substance use disorders designed to increase treatment compliance and reunification. This presentation explores findings from a qualitative study of parental perspectives within FTCs on factors influencing compliance, focusing on the interplay of relational and structural dynamics.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explore the role of operant behavioral theory and procedural justice theoretical frameworks in parental compliance within FTCs, highlighting the importance of personalized and systemic supports in enhancing treatment outcomes.
  2. Identify key themes from parents’ perspectives on what promotes or hinders compliance within FTCs, shedding light on effective strategies and the significance of court-client relationships.
  3. Discuss the implications of relational and structural dynamics in FTCs on social work practice, policy, and education, with a focus on adopting inclusive inclusive approaches to support families with parental substance use disorders.
