Session: Rural Urban Parity

Dismantling the Rural-Urban Divide in Environmental Justice Education, Practice, and Research

The authors will present two case studies that outline the interconnected environmental harms and potential solutions across urban and rural contexts. Using Pellow’s (2017) critical environmental justice (CEJ) framework, this session presents a conceptual model for dismantling the urban-rural siloing in current environmental social work education, practice, and research.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the critical similarities in environmental justice across urban and rural contexts.
  2. Understand the four pillars of critical environmental justice (CEJ).
  3. Create lesson plans and assignments for masters and bachelors level social workers that interrogate rural and urban environmental injustices through a critical environmental justice (CEJ) lens.
