Bianca De Bellis, LCSW, M.Ed is a doctoral candidate at the University of Pittsburgh. She is dedicated to creating safe educational spaces for students with trauma histories. Her current scholarship focuses on utilizing trauma-informed restorative models to mitigate the school-to-prison pipeline and other harms resulting from exclusionary discipline. Specifically, she is focused on developing trauma-informed mental health interventions within traditional restorative models to support better social emotional, behavioral and academic outcomes for trauma-affected youth.
Bianca’s research interests are informed by over a decade of practice experience. She began her career working as a Special Educator in New York City public schools where she experienced firsthand the disproportionalities of trauma-affected Black youth within exclusionary discipline and the achievement gap. She supported the development of a restorative school community and transitioned to a social work role where she provided counseling, crisis intervention, and restorative mediations; most significantly, Bianca worked on a multi-disciplinary team that served to support students holistically through social-emotional interventions and restorative justice. She directed the implementation of a school wide mental-health curriculum within a restorative paradigm which covered topics including emotion regulation, suicide awareness, anxiety management, and self-esteem. Additionally, she facilitated staff trainings on suicide prevention, trauma-informed education practices and restorative justice.
Bianca hopes to contribute to the advancement of social work and education through both research and practice by focusing on holistic school climate models that address the rights of dignity, diversity, human relationships, and social justice.
