Stephen Monroe Tomczak holds an M.S.W. degree from the University of Connecticut and a Ph.D. in social policy from Brandeis University. Dr. Tomczak has an extensive background in social work education and research. A tenured full professor at the Southern Connecticut State University Department of Social Work, he has taught courses on the history of social welfare policy and the social work profession for 25 years. His research focuses on the history of social welfare and social work; poverty and programs to address this; social movements; and the history of community organization in social work. Overarching themes in Tomczak's writings include critical analysis of poverty and economic inequality and historical responses to this. He currently serves as president of the Social Welfare History Group (SWHG), on the board of the Association for Community Organization and Social Action (ACOSA), and as a member of the national steering committee of the Social Welfare Action Alliance (SWAA), among other professional and activist organizations.
