Teaching Historical Perspectives in Social Work Education: Embracing Legacies of Place, People, Practice, Praxis

This workshop trains educators to teach a critical and comprehensive social work history, emphasizing its contested evolution, key figures, diversity, and practices. It aims to create an inclusive curriculum that acknowledges socio-political contexts, celebrates diverse contributions, and addresses inequalities, promoting equity and justice in social work education and practice.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon completion, participants will be able to teach social work's history, emphasizing evolution across eras, regions, and socio-political impacts. They'll refine strategies, empowering students to face modern challenges with deep historical insights. This approach enhances understanding of the profession's development, fostering a comprehensive perspective on addressing contemporary social work issues.
  2. Upon completion, participants will be able to incorporate stories of historically underrepresented groups into social work courses, with a special emphasis on the achievements of social workers of color. This goal seeks to broaden the curriculum's inclusivity, encouraging teaching approaches that confront racism and colonialism while valuing diverse cultural contributions.
  3. Upon completion, participants will be able to delve into social work's history, challenging and expanding traditional definitions while examining practice standards, ethical norms, and education criteria. This prepares educators to highlight historical milestones' relevance to contemporary practice, emphasizing the importance of historical knowledge in addressing evolving challenges of social work.
