James (Jim) Martin is a Professor Emeritus of Social Work and Social Research and a retired Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with fifty years of professional social work practice experience. His scholarship and public service focus on the well-being of individuals, families and communities, and his research and civic engagement address military and Veteran populations. A retired Colonel in the Army Medical Department, Jim’s distinguished military career included a wide array of clinical, research, as well as senior program management (command) and policy assignments. Jim was the senior Social Work Officer in the Combat Theater during the First Gulf War.
Jim has served as a subject matter expert for numerous Department of Defense and other related federal, as well as state-level policy, program development, and research initiatives. In 2007 Jim was invited to testify before The President’s Commission on Care for America's Returning Wounded Warriors and he has remained engaged in initiatives to enhance behavioral health and reintegration services for military/Veteran-connected populations, including services that promote the well being of survivors of military death. Most recently, along with colleagues at Bryn Mawr, Jim has develop a series of webinars for Ukrainian social workers focused on the many challenges associated with social work practice in wartime environments.
