Ande Nesmith is School of Social Work Director and Professor at the University of St. Thomas in the Morrison Family College of Health (MFCOH). She studies environmental justice and outcomes for youth transitioning to adulthood from substitute care. She has developed social work curricular tools to promote an eco-centric perspective that values ethical decisions and prioritizes the health and well-being of all living organisms, ecological systems, and planetary health. She has several publications and books on the topic and speaks to a broad range of audiences and settings both locally and internationally. Dr. Nesmith served as chair for the CSWE Committee on Environmental Justice and the MFCOH Sustainability Committee. She is a commissioner with the CSWE Commission on Global Social Work Education where she focuses on global environmental justice issues. When not working on environmental justice, Dr. Nesmith studies outcomes for youth and young adults who have been involved with social services such as foster care or juvenile justice. She was recently awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study support systems and biological family connections for youth in the Czech Republic who are aging out of either child institutions or foster care. She continues to work closely with a Czech-American research team of researchers across three universities.
