Beth is in her third year pursuing a Ph.D. in social work at Florida State University. She aims to further the understanding of how mental health affects African immigrants and to promote cultural awareness, sensitivity, and best practices in her higher education teaching.
She has worked in social work practice in various capacities for more than 28 years, including 16 years living and working internationally, with almost 13 years in Malawi and Ghana, Africa. She was a Peace Corps Volunteer and Peace Corps Response Volunteer. In 2006, she and her husband began a non-profit organization that provided scholarships for Ghanaian students to pursue higher educational opportunities in Ghana. In 2014, they began Palm University College to educate ethical and excellent leaders. Also, while in Ghana, she developed and continues coordinating a program for BSW and MSW social work students to complete their field practicum in various local organizations. Ninety students from 18 universities have participated. In addition, she began teaching in 2010 for various institutions at the undergraduate and graduate levels of social work.
