Social work research often addresses the impact of policies and institutions on oppressed communities and populations. However, it is essential for social work to also “study up,” and turn the lens of scrutiny on the institutions and power-holders who shape the circumstances that affect the lives and wellbeing of service-users.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will identify why "studying up" is valuable for institutional accountability.
Upon completion, participants will be prepared to navigate ethical considerations and access issues that are unique to studying resistant institutions.
Upon completion, participants will understand how "studying up" power-holders in immigration court situates more effective interventions at each level of practice.
