The violent colonization of Indigenous communities has inflicted profound generational trauma. Communities have survived via collective healing practices, grounded in resistance and cultural resilience. By centering principles of Indigenous healing, social workers can reimagine care for individuals and communities experiencing mental health distress, especially those most deeply marginalized.

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe ways in which the colonization of Indigenous communities unleashed generations of historical trauma
2. Contrast principles and practices of Indigenous mental health healing with those of Western, neoliberal approaches
3. List challenges and successes in curriculum transformation efforts related to the infusion of Indigenous healing principles
