Depression, Coping Skills, Social Support, and Life Satisfaction Among Older Adults in Assisted Living

This study explored the roles of depression, coping skills, and social support on life satisfaction among 316 older adults in assisted living. Hierarchical regression revealed that depression and avoidance coping were significant factors decreasing life satisfaction. Social support from friends, perceived health, and age were significant factors increasing life satisfaction.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will identify the roles of depression, coping skills, and social support on life satisfaction among 316 older adults in assisted living.
  2. Participants will understand the importance of assessing depression and providing appropriate mental health services (such as counseling and therapy) to enhance life satisfaction.
  3. Participants will understand the importance of the necessity of appropriate coping skills and social support programs for older adults to improve their life satisfaction.
