Joana is a 4th-year PhD student in the School of Social Work at Michigan State University. Her main research interest focuses on parental health and healthcare access as child maltreatment prevention. However, during her PhD program, Joana has developed a passionate interest in social work education, specifically regarding anti-racist content and pedagogies. As a FAST Fellow (Future Academic Scholars in Teaching), Joana focused her teaching-as-research project in this area. She has been collaborating with several committees in her advocacy for a curriculum change that includes a standalone class on anti-racism, power, and privilege.
