Eco-Anxiety and the Medicalization of Indigenous Trauma: Implications for Eco-Social Work

When eco-anxiety in indigenous cultures is predominantly understood from a pathological or clinical perspective, indigenous trauma becomes more medicalized. This research uses narrative synthesis to critically examine the existing evidence concerning eco-anxiety and its implications for eco-social work, within the larger framework of sovereignty of Indigenous knowledge and environmental justice.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To understand the complex context of eco-anxiety within indigenous communities that includes historical, environmental, and cultural factors.
  2. To synthesize the impact of medicalization and pathologization of eco-anxiety on indigenous communities and their trauma.
  3. Analyze the role of eco-social work in addressing the eco-anxiety and risks of medicalization within indigenous communities, particularly with the centrality of Indigenous Knowledge Sovereignty and Environmental Justice.
