Public Library Staff Openness to Social Work in One Midwestern State

Social work in public libraries has grown exponentially to support library staff in their expanded roles of meeting patron psychosocial needs. However, new interdisciplinary collaborations may be another change to which librarians must adapt. We surveyed library staff, finding that empowerment predicted greater openness and reduced burnout.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the roles of social work practicum students and social workers in public libraries in urban and rural communities.
  2. Understand the variability and pressures on public services library staff in today’s libraries in urban and rural communities.
  3. Identify personal coping resources that can be strengthened among public services staff by social work practicum students or social workers collaborating with public libraries.
