Megan E. Gilster, PhD (she/her/hers)

Megan Gilster, PhD, is an Associate Professor and Associate Director at the University of Iowa School of Social Work. Her program of research contributes to social science theory and social work practice in four areas: 1) how neighborhoods contribute to residents’ mental and physical health and disparities; 2) how formal neighborhood social organization impacts communities and informs community practice; 3) how residents experience and navigate the stressors of housing instability; and 4) whether housing interventions create change for individual tenants and for the surrounding neighborhoods and communities.

Professor Gilster teaches practice with organizations and communities and program evaluation to MSW students and writing for publication for interdisciplinary PhD students. Her teaching employs community-engaged methods to impact local communities and address community needs, which ultimately deepens students’ learning. Professor Gilster also serves as a writing coach for the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity.
