Session: Resituating a Values Orientation in Social Work Research and Practice

“We Foster a Culture of Compliance”: Exploring Social Workers Experiences With Moral Distress

This presentation reports findings from a qualitative study examining social workers’ experiences with moral distress. Three themes were identified in the analysis. Participants named organizational and structural factors as the most impactful in reducing or creating moral distress among social workers.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon completion, the participant will be able to define moral distress.
  2. Upon completion, the participant will be able to describe individual, organizational, and structural factors contributing to moral distress among social workers.
  3. Upon completion, the participant will be able to describe individual, organizational, and structural factors reducing moral distress among social workers.
