Authentic Voices in Social Work Education: Bringing “Service User” Experience to Classrooms

This panel discussion will present an opportunity to critically appraise the very concept of service user involvement in classroom education in the United States. This discussion occurs in the context of ongoing work by CSWE in producing a Curricular Guide on Service User Involvement in social work education.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon completion, the participants will be able to engage in learning about service user pedagogy and will be able to identify the merits of using this type of approach in their curriculum.
  2. Upon completion, the participant will be able to critically reflect on the nuances associated with this type of pedagogy which will be essential in planning ahead for implementation in their own educational settings.
  3. Upon completion, the participant will be able to appraise at a critical level the contribution and value of experiential knowledge from the service user standpoint as a necessary aspect of planning for implementation in their own educational settings.
