Indigenous and Tribal

Bridging the Distance to Support Online BSW Students in Rural and Tribal Communities

We will explore collaborations with five Tribal colleges that challenged our program to respond to the needs of our students and guide the process of developing an Indigenous framework (Waterman, 2018). Our Tribal partners have engaged us in what Finn (2021) describes as a “teaching and learning process”.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Critically analyze what works to support Indigenous BSW students in distance learning and what existing barriers within academia need to be recognized and challenged
  2. Identify considerations and opportunities for partnering with Tribal and rural community colleges to enhance inclusivity and diversity, and build a professional workforce in underserved areas
  3. Appraise progress and tensions in developing an Indigenous framework within a social work program
