Colonial Practice Will Never Heal Colonial Wounds: Indigenous Perspectives on Decolonizing Social Work Education

Higher education demands the assimilation of Indigenous students to Western scientific, professional and social paradigms. While we speak of decolonizing social work education, colonial practice will never heal colonial wounds (Stokas, 2023). Our efforts must center the Indigenous lens, and address cultural identity, cultural insensitivity, and Indigenous autonomy to succeed.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will have increased awareness of the gaps in higher education for Indigenous students, including the harms associated with assimilation.
  2. Participants will be able to name 3 or more strategies for disrupting isolation and microaggressions commonly experienced by Indigenous students.
  3. Participants will be able to define Indigenous autonomy and describe at least one example of what this might look like in social work practice and pedagogy.
