Working While Scared: Understanding the Experiences of Black Women in Social Work Academia

At the intersection of gender, race, and profession, Black women in social work academia face distinct experiences and challenges. This workshop offers a space for candid dialogue about the collective experiences of Black women within social work programs, including successes and challenges like isolation, racism, cultural taxation, and emotional labor.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify and discuss successes as well as common challenges faced by Black women in social work academia, such as navigating social work academic culture while also dealing with isolation, tokenism, racism, discrimination, cultural taxation, and emotional labor.
  2. Understand the experiences of Black women in social work academia to gain collective understanding, find community, and develop allyship.
  3. Learn strategies and tools to empower oneself and others to navigate academic careers, especially considering the current climate of DEI backlash.
