Anti-Oppressive Methodologies in Dissertation Research: A Call for Transformative Support for Doctoral Scholars

Centering student experiences, the goals of this presentation are (1) challenge paradigms that push students to complete dissertation research quickly; (2) call in doctoral programs to support anti-oppressive methodologies in dissertation research. This presentation will illuminate experiences of non-traditional doctoral candidates and provide insight into supporting anti-oppressive dissertation research.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will gain awareness of the recurring challenges faced by non-traditional, BIPOC and/or 2SLGBTQIA+ students engaged in community-driven anti-oppressive dissertation research including the various ethical considerations involved in producing knowledge with and about marginalized communities for which we represent.
  2. Participants will develop a critical awareness of the potential harm associated with oppressive policies and practices such as institution-centered dissertation timelines and the value of promoting holistic and social justice approaches to the dissertation process.
  3. Participants will engage in a critical dialogue on resistance to oppressive practices and explore affirming strategies inclusive of non-traditional mentorship practices that prioritize individualization, reflexivity, and the ethics of producing community driven research in the context of the dissertation.
