Structural Vulnerabilities and Over-Criminalization of LGBTQ+ Youth

LGBTQ+ youth face a cycle of rejection, homelessness, and criminalization, heightening their risk of justice-involvement for survival crimes and consensual sex acts. Findings suggest LGBTQ+ identification, family rejection, and multiple past-year detentions significantly increase the likelihood of incarceration for prostitution-related charges.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to identify structural factors that contribute to the over-criminalization of LGBTQ+ youth and how those factors generate systemic vulnerabilities that disproportionately impact LGBTQ+ youth
  2. Participants, as allies to and co-conspirators with LGBTQ+ communities, will be able to discern pathways for institutional change within the existing juvenile justice system, as well as opportunities for demanding government accountability for harm that current practices cause LGBTQ+ justice-involved youth
  3. Participants will be able to critically examine current practices of the juvenile justice system and the enormous reach of this institution that punishes LGBTQ+ youth for the abuse, abandonment, and discrimination that they face
