Doctoral Candidate
Michigan State University, United States
Jax Kynn is a doctoral candidate at Michigan State University's School of Social Work. Jax's dissertation work focuses on the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ systems-involved youth, and the role of their involvement in the juvenile justice and child welfare systems as sites of institutional betrayal. With a background in policy evaluation, their research interrogates systemic oppression as it manifests through inter-institutional practices and policies to promote systems change.
Jax received their MA in Gender Studies from Central European University in 2013 and their MSW from Rutgers University in 2015. Before pursuing their doctorate in social work from MSU, Jax worked as project manager in a university research lab, program evalutor, and a podcast producer on a project about university/college campus interpersonal violence. Their research interests include: translatable research in digital media, LGBTQ+ political advocacy, arts-based methods, and youth empowerment.
