Session: Cultural Clashes, Climate Change, and the Understanding of Indigenous Populations

Climate-Related Indigenous Migrants From the Andean Region of South America: Considerations for Social Work

Climate change-related crises result in forced migration of Indigenous peoples from South America. Building upon Indigenous feminism, intersectionality, and structural social work theory, the presenters illustrate how US-based social workers can intervene with these climate refugees through collaboration with community health promoters, policy advocacy, and education.

Learning Objectives:

  1. articulate the specific impacts of a changing climate on Indigenous communities living in the Andean region of South America and how these impacts serve as a push factor in immigration.
  2. recognize how forced migration affects the mental health of Indigenous communities as they must abandon the sacred lands and practices that are part of their ancestral culture.
  3. name potential mezzo and macro level strategies for working with climate refugees.
