Abolitionist Praxis for Social Work Education

As the topic of carceral abolition is increasingly discussed in social work education and practice, this panel examines the ways in which abolitionist praxis intersects with and diverges from social work theory and practice. This panel asks, “what does abolition mean in the context of professionalized social work?”

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon completion, participants will be able to articulate a definition of abolitionism.
  2. Upon completion, participants will understand the historical context for abolitionist thinking/practice in social work.
  3. Upon completion, participants will understand the connection between anti-racist education and practice and abolitionist education and practice.
