Social, Economic, and Environmental Justice

Reproductive Justice Course Creation, Learning Community, and Future Possibilities in a Changing, Complex Context

In a post-Roe world, schools of social work are vital for preparing social workers to engage in advancing reproductive justice. In this panel, we share successes and challenges in our institution’s response, including a student-led learning community and the development of an elective course first offered in Fall 2023.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe tenets of Reproductive Justice by SisterSong, whose mission is “to strengthen and amplify the collective voices of indigenous women and women of color to achieve reproductive justice.” The human right to own our bodies, to have/not have children, to parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities.
  2. Conceptualize a collaborative reproductive justice learning community within their home institutions, including use of community collaboration and consciousness raising.
  3. Conceptualize a reproductive justice course within their home institutions, drawing from critical theoretical frameworks such as intersectionality, disability justice, radical reproductive justice, Black Feminism, and racial capitalism to examine how systems of oppression and bodily autonomy are intertwined to impact the language, practices, policies that control racialized, and gendered bodies.
