Decolonial Queer Theory: Using Story Circles to Explore Gendered Trauma and Experience

Decolonial queer theory brings together decolonial thinking and queer theory to question binary thought patterns commonly seen in settler culture. Presenters will discuss the importance of including decolonial queer theory in the social work curriculum and use the indigenous method of story circles to capture concepts of intersectionality and non-binarism.

Learning Objectives:

  1. define the need for centering decolonial queer theory in the social work curriculum.
  2. examine the way indigenous knowledge systems create a structured container to engage with sensitive topics such as gendered trauma.
  3. explore story circle practices as a means of capturing and promoting the concepts of intersectionality, non-binarism, and indigenous knowledge systems.
