Using my dissertation as a case study, this paper presents the argument that social work practitioners and students should engage with the communities they seek to work with through a critical, meaningful, participatory, and action-oriented lens.
Learning Objectives:
Articulate the relationship between learning outcomes, embedded institutional hierarchies, and community engagement for social work students and researchers.
Describe the role of participatory and action research in classroom and field-based settings.
Articulate new ways of engaging in social work pedagogy that more equitably invites students into their surrounding communities to better understand impacts of social welfare policy and social work practice.
