Latter-Day Saint Families' Acceptance Journeys of Their LGB Child: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis

How do parents fully accept their lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) child while navigating homophobic doctrines and practices infused in their church? Using interpretative phenomenological analysis, we share qualitative data about the spiritual trajectories of parents who are members of a conservative faith organization learning to accept their LGB child.

Learning Objectives:

  1. 1. Participants will gain an understanding of the experiences of LDS parents navigating the path toward accepting their LGB child.
  2. 2. Participants will gain an understanding of supporting a client in their spiritual journey when faced with a conflict between doctrine and faith.
  3. 3. Participants will learn ways to engage with social work students on the topic of client spirituality and family conflict.
