What Factors Shape Perceptions of Support Among Black Women in Social Work PhD Programs?

Findings will be presented from a mixed methods study exploring demographic factors affecting perceptions of social support among Black women in social work Ph.D. programs. The findings of this study will center voices of color, enhance the provision of available support, and increase the well-being of Black women pursuing Ph.D.s.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the factors that can contribute to Black women in research doctoral programs feeling disconnected from the learning environment.
  2. Define the role of social support in enhancing the sense of connectedness to the learning environment for Black women in research doctoral programs.
  3. Describe factors that enhance feelings of social support among Black women in Ph.D. research doctoral programs.
