Decolonizing Equity as a Pathway to Transforming Social Work Education

Decolonizing equity offers pathways to transforming social work education by centering our collective responsibility to honour Indigenous knowledge sovereignty, lands and lifeways. Decolonizing equity offers meaningful and practical ways to heal our professional knowledge base, pedagogical practices, recruitment and retention strategies, faculty hiring and evaluation practices and relationships with community.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon completion, participants will be able to demonstrate an understanding of decolonizing equity and its relevance to transforming social work education.
  2. Upon completion, participants will be able to articulate the connection between decolonial equity frameworks and the 2024 APM theme emphasizing the responsibility of social work education/social workers to honour Indigenous knowledge sovereignty and ensure environmental justice, as well as the interconnected 2023 APM theme emphasizing anti-racist social work education.
  3. Upon completion, participants will be able to begin to identify pathways for enacting decolonial approaches to equity in their respective institutions including in, for example, curriculum development, admissions, faculty hiring and evaluation, relationships with local communities and nations, and sustainability and wellbeing of BIPOC faculty and staff undertaking equity work.
