Social work students often prefer micro-level content over research and macro-level courses, impacting their future career paths. This panel explores integrating course-based community-engaged research (CB-CER) into social work education, emphasizing its transformative potential. Attendees will consider the benefits, challenges, and practical strategies for creating and navigating effective CB-CER projects.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the rationale for integrating course-based community-engaged research (CB-CER) into social work education: Participants will grasp the significance of CB-CER in cultivating critical thinking skills, fostering community understanding, and promoting social justice within the social work curriculum.
  2. Identify benefits, opportunities, and challenges of CB-CER for students: Participants will analyze how CB-CER allows students to apply textbook concepts to real-world contexts, bridging classroom learning and community practice while navigating associated challenges.
  3. Explore strategies for designing, implementing, and evaluating CB-CER projects: Participants will examine strategies for building authentic partnerships with community organizations, co-creating research agendas, and addressing ethical considerations in CB-CER project design and implementation.
