Creating Academic Safe Spaces Through an Indigenous Writing Process From a Native Hawaiian Perspective

Despite the critical need for Indigenous scientific leadership to address substance use in communities, Indigenous scholars encounter numerous adversities in academia. This presentation describes an Indigenous Writing Retreat in Hawai‘i to empower scholars through cultivating their Form (intellectual knowledge) and Essence (true intention and authentic feeling) in culturally safe spaces.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon completion, the participant will be able to articulate an Indigenous Writing Retreat process from a Native Hawaiian perspective which emphasizes the cultivation of Form (intellectual knowledge) and Essence (expression of true intention and authentic feeling) as a pathway to strengthening cultural identity and confidence for Indigenous scholars.
  2. Upon completion, the participant will be able to increase awareness on how to organize and host an Indigenous Writing Retreat to promote a sense of belonging and community connectedness among Indigenous scholars, mentors, and community hosts (kūpuna (Elders), leaders, and community practitioners).
  3. Upon completion, the participant will be able to gain ideas on how to create academically and culturally safe spaces for Indigenous scholars through the use of culturally immersive experiences, reflections, and an insight-building activity grounded in a Native Hawaiian cultural metaphor.
