Tammy Kahalaopuna Kahoʻolemana Martin is a Native Hawaiian community researcher who was born and raised on the windward side of Oʻahu. She earned a PhD in Social Welfare from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and is currently a full-time Assistant Professor at Hawaiʻi Pacific University. As an Indigenous health scientist, she has embraced her kuleana (responsibility) bestowed upon her by her kupuna (Elders) and ʻohana (family) to serve and uplift Native Hawaiian communities. She is committed to conducting research that will lead to culturally grounded assessments focused on defining and measuring constructs of cultural and historical trauma and cultural reclamation. She also intends to develop community-led, culturally-informed upstream interventions that address health disparities, such as substance use and mental health challenges among Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders.
