This panel highlights legal and policy failures regarding the rights of asylum seekers in the US; discusses implications of the political climate on asylum policy; underscores the importance of anti-racist, migration-informed social work education to better prepare practitioners; and emphasizes the need for resilient and adaptable social work practices.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, the participant will be able to explain social work implications for the disparate ways asylum seekers are treated in the United States compared to refugees.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to describe legal and policy failures related to assuring the rights of asylum seekers seeking refuge in the United States and several strategies for adapting social work practices to navigate shifts in administration priorities and legislative landscapes.
Upon completion, the participant will be able to articulate why social work education must prepare practitioners to work with asylum seekers in clinical, policy, and advocacy realms and how this is linked to anti-racist approaches to practice.
