Elithet Silva-Martínez is an Associate Professor and Interim Director at the Beatriz Lassalle Graduate School of Social Work, University of Puerto Rico. Her studies on this theme have been presented around the world including countries such as Ireland, Slovenia, Chile, Panama, Cuba, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Jamaica, South Africa and the Dominican Republic, among others. Based on her intention to make visible the experiences of the immigrant women with whom she has worked on, the production of the short film “Desempacando: Gender, migration and violence” emerged, and has been presented in more than ten film festivals in different countries. Her collaborative work with the Center for Dominican Woman inspired her to create spaces for participatory research in which her fellow social workers served as researchers and co-authors as shown in their book titled “Narrativas de Lucha: Immigrant women and gender violence in Puerto Rico.” In addition, she was also recently awarded for her children's story titled "The secret dream of a ballet tutu" by the Popular Education Network for Women of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Her passion for supporting survivors of gender violence prompted her to co-found the SIEMPRE VIVAS Metro organization together with students and faculty at the University of Puerto Rico, focusing on service and research on gender violence, as well as individual and group support to survivors of violence, project that has been reviewed by the national and international press for the use of arts and writing to address gender violence.
