Dr. Ryan was the Dean of the University of Texas at Arlington's School of Social Work for 14 years; where, under his leadership, it became the largest social work program in the state by student census. Dr. Ryan also served as the Director of the Center for Clinical Social Work; which provided clinical therapy services to at-risk students and their families. Dr. Ryan is a Faculty Affiliate with the UTA Center for African American Studies and was the Interim Director of UTA's Interdisciplinary Studies Program. He is the Editor of the journal Adoption Quarterly. Since coming to UTA, Dr. Ryan has secured over $6,000,000 in donor funding. During his tenure, the SSW consistently rose in the US News & World Report's and other national rankings.
To support his scholarly work, he has received over $9,000,000 in funding. Dr. Ryan has received the Friend of Children Award from the North American Council on Adoptable Children, an Angel in Adoption Award from the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, and an Adoption Excellence Award from the U.S. Children's Bureau. In 2020, he was awarded the NASW North Central Texas Branch Lifetime Achievement Award, and, in 2023, he was recognized as an NASW Social Work Pioneer. Dr. Ryan is a member of the local chapter of Bikers Against Child Abuse. He has also worked to train his French Bulldog, Moose, to become a registered therapy dog. They go together to help children in agencies/schools, as well as visit the residents of nursing home facilities.
