As an Assistant Professor and emerging Hmong American woman scholar, Dr. Pa Nhia Xiong's research focuses on social justice, human rights, poverty, and health disparities among Hmong Americans and other oppressed populations. Guided by a framework of strength-based, resiliency, and equity-mindedness, she has employed qualitative research methodology to capture the personal backgrounds, lived experiences, resilience, and unique stories of minority groups, specifically the Hmong population. Qualitative research allows participants’ stories to shed light on the needs of the Hmong community and identify key contributors that lead to positive outcomes in marginalized communities. Her research seeks to identify institutional policies and practices that hinder minority populations from accessing equitable resources and healthcare services. As such, she believes that disaggregation of data by specific race and ethnic groups is needed to inform service professionals and policymakers to remove social and economic barriers to underserved individuals.
