Umaira (she/her) is a 3rd year PhD student at University of Houston. Her work focuses on mental health and emotional wellbeing among youth and students with disabilities. Her interdisciplinary approach to research and practice is directly informed by professional experience in therapeutic foster care and special education. Her dissertation examines mental health experiences of students identified with “emotional disturbance.” Umaira utilizes a decolonial framework of mental health, and contextualizes school-based emotional and behavioral disabilities in a racialized school-to-prison pipeline.
