Field Education Faculty/Co-Director School Social Work Program

Hector is an LCSW who also holds an M.A. in systematic theology. He is a UCLA field education faculty member and co-director for the school social work/PPSC program. Aside from teaching mental health classes and school social work-specific courses at UCLA, he also conducts postgraduate PPSC training for students across California. Hector is an author and has participated in research regarding school safety. Hector also serves on many local and state advisory boards and committees regarding school social work and provides consultation to the school district's mental health programs. Hector is a mental health advocate and has worked on projects related to children, newly arrived unaccompanied minors, and LGBTQ youth and pushed for social justice policies.
Before arriving at UCLA, Hector worked for schools as a school social worker, gang-involved youth specialist, and mental health liaison, coordinating and overseeing the mental health services for the district. In addition, he assisted with district-wide training, trauma, self-regulation, gangs, suicide, and evidence-based interventions. He also has experience as a private practice therapist, high school teacher, drug and alcohol counselor, gang diversion specialist, community liaison for the city of Long Beach, and hospice chaplain/medical social worker.
