Annie Zean Dunbar is a Clinical Associate Professor at the College of Public Service at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Zean’s current research engages Black newcomer (refugees/(im)migrants) direct service providers who work in newcomer services to understand the ways they navigate their professional and personal roles under organizational constraint, welfare austerity, and a xenophobic political climate. Zean also supports research projects that foreground traditional Indigenous health knowledge for Indigenous peoples of the Americas, examines the role of mutual aid on everyday practitioners as they navigate the COVID-19 pandemic's present and future, explores the role of racialized ageism on older adults, name a few. Broadly, her research interests include racialization and identity, organizational theory, mutual aid and community care, and long-term newcomer belonging in the US.
Zean's artistic practice foregrounds Black feminist traditions to examine the interstitial experiences of displaced peoples in the United States, the impacts of truth and omission in communities, liminality, temporality, memory, and the effusive nature of healing. Zean's praxis is embodied in reciprocal and community-centered ways that deepen conviviality, care, and responsibility to the communities she works with as a social work educator and scholar.
