Cynthia Mackey is a first-generation doctoral candidate with the School of Social Work at Arizona State University (ASU). She received her BSW at Toronto Metropolitan University in Toronto, Canada, and MSW at ASU in Phoenix, Arizona. Cynthia is a graduate fellow alumna with the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Minority Fellow Program and a scholar/project coordinator with the Inclusive Design for Equity and Access (IDEA) office at Watts College at Arizona State University. She is currently in her 6th year of the PhD program in Social Work as ASU as well. Her research is focused on understanding mental wellbeing among returning (formerly incarcerated) Black women in Arizona, employing arts-based research and critical methodologies informed by Black feminist/womanist perspectives. She collaborates with local coalitions on research and evaluation efforts aimed at integrating community-based approaches to address health inequities. Cynthia also actively engages in initiatives promoting anti-racist and anti-oppressive practice at ASU and with community. Beyond academics, she enjoys family time, exercise, and gaming.
