Emily S. Ihara, PhD, MSW, FGSA, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Social Work at George Mason University. Her research focuses on interventions, policies, and system changes necessary to eliminate health inequities and improve quality of life for older adults. Focused primarily on individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, her current projects focus on non-pharmacological, person-centered interventions, such as those involving music or creative storytelling; assessing ways to improve lived experiences; and seeking upstream solutions for the fragmented long-term care system to support the unpaid contributions of informal caregivers and the working conditions of formal caregivers. She has been a member of the CSWE Commission on Research since 2019.
