Assistant Professor
James Madison University, United States
Dr. Kang, an Assistant Professor at James Madison University's Department of Social Work, is passionate about improving the lives of older adults. Driven by a passion for combating ageism and fostering a society that respects aging, Dr. Kang leverages his expertise in gerontology to bridge the gap in understanding and improve the quality of life for older adults. His research focuses on understanding public attitudes towards older adults and their impact on cognitive, psychosocial, and social well-being. He also aims to develop non-pharmacological interventions to address cognitive challenges and enhance the overall health of aging individuals. During his postdoctoral fellowship at George Mason University, he led the Alzheimer's and Related Diseases Research Award Fund project as a PI. He also held key roles at the University of Kansas' Center for Research on Aging and Disability Options (CRADO), including lead data analyst for the Medicaid Functional Eligibility Instrument (MFEI) project. Here, he played a pivotal role in developing the MFEI LOC algorithm, now used throughout Kansas to determine eligibility for Medicaid Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS) for diverse populations. Prior to his Ph.D., he gained valuable experience as a practical researcher at the Seoul Welfare Foundation, further enriching his understanding of social welfare issues. During his master's program, he participated in three national research projects as a research assistant, covering diverse topics like long-term care insurance, social enterprise, and national population surveys. He remains actively involved in gerontology research, currently exploring the effects of community-based interventions on well-being of older adults.
