Otima Doyle is an Associate Professor at the Jane Addams College of Social Work, and Co-Founder and Co-Director of LEADR (Lab for Empowerment and Advancement through Dad-Driven Research). LEADR’s mission is to support the overall well-being of families in urban settings by engaging in father-focused research, at both practice and policy levels, which is relevant and acceptable to fathers and families.
Dr. Doyle’s research builds on fathers’ strengths to support both parenting and youth’s mental and behavioral health, including the development of father-focused interventions with Black fathers and youth. Through her work, she has helped add the largely underrepresented perspectives of African American fathers to the growing scholarly discourse on the gendered and cultural contexts that shape African American fathers’ parenting and youth’s well-being.
Dr. Doyle has published as the lead author in journals such as Family Process, Social Work Research, the Journal of Family Issues, American Journal of Public Health, Research on Social Work Practice, and the Psychology of Men and Masculinity. She is a Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR) Fellow and serves as a co-chair for SSWR’s Social Work Practice Cluster and their Fatherhood-Related Research Special Interest Group. She is a member of the Scholars Network on Black Masculinity. As a licensed clinical social worker, Dr. Doyle provided individual, group, and family therapy to adolescent boys in residential treatment. At JACSW, she is the chair of the practice specialization and has led the call to include father-relevant content in the MSW curriculum.
