Carrie W. Rishel joined the faculty at the West Virginia Universiry School of Social Work in 2004. Prior to completing her PhD at the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work her social work practice experience centered on working with children and families, especially on prevention work with children in schools. Her research addresses the prevention of child mental health problems and behavioral health workforce development for integrated practice settings. Federal awards from HRSA (Health Resources and Services Administration) have funded the development of a behavioral health training program for master’s level social work students, which she directs. The program prepares Master of Social Work (MSW) students to apply a prevention-focused integrative approach to address the behavioral health needs of rural populations. Oher current research interests include trauma-informed early school-based intervention for children and community-based prevention and early-intervention efforts. She is actively involved in efforts across the state to improve access to effective behavioral health services for children and families.
