Harmony Linden, MSW, LISW, is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Resilience and Trauma-Informed Perspectives Certificate at the University of Iowa School of Social Work. She has more than a decade of experience in clinical social work, focusing her practice on mental health following traumatic experiences. Her research interests include mental health, trauma, resilience, and the lived experiences of sexual and gender minority individuals.
Professor Linden teaches courses on clinical social work, professional use of self, trauma and resilience, and practicum seminars. She advises and mentors students in the MSW program, focusing on helping students navigate clinical practice issues. Recently, she collaborated to develop curriculum for several new courses, including two clinical practice courses, a generalist theory and skills course, a course on professional use of self, and she piloted a student portfolio project. She’s a member of the School’s Diversity and Social Justice Committee and chair of the advisory board for the University’s Undergraduate Certificate in Resilience and Trauma-Informed Perspectives.
Professor Linden’s research and teaching are informed by her clinical practice experience, working with individuals and families from diverse backgrounds. She initiated policy changes to better support transgender clients in a residential treatment center, including successful advocacy for the use of preferred names, pronouns, and bathrooms. She has extensive experience working with gender and sexual minority individuals and has observed the impact of discrimination and oppression on their mental health and well-being.
